The 'Force Multiplier' Your Non-Profit Needs in 2025

Two summers ago I hiked the spectacular West Coast Trail on Vancouver Island with some acquaintances. As we all got to know each other, conversation turned toward our jobs. There were a couple guys in real estate, a builder, a Navy SEAL (no kidding), and me.

I’m a strategy consultant. I facilitate meetings and trainings, develop organizational plans, and help leaders navigate leadership succession. I tried explaining this, but it felt like my new friends were drawing a blank.

Finally I said, “I help the people who help people for a living.”

Light bulbs went on! One guy said, “So you get teams focused on their priorities in the midst of all the daily demands.”  Yep.

Another noted, “A lot of folks who run organizations could really use a skilled guide when they face leadership challenges - someone who’s been there.”  Bingo.

The SEAL replied, “We call that a ‘force multiplier.’” Copy that!

Often the “What do you do?” question can trip up a good conversation! There’s the answer from your organizational plan or job description, and then there’s the real-life version. Chances are, your team members feel the same.

  • If you could get everyone on the same page, how much would your organization save in wasted time, energy, and money?

  • If your strategic plans weren’t collecting dust, what could your organization achieve?

  • If you knew how to prepare for the next leader to take the reins, would you sleep better at night?

Last year, I supported incredible organizations across three continents, from guiding CEOs through leadership transitions to gathering insights from stakeholders through facilitated engagements and helping agencies develop innovative collaborative strategies.
